Milk Thistle

Milk thistle nutritionally supports the liver's ability to maintain normal liver function. Dandelion is one of the strongest cholagogues and choleretics known. Its ability to promote the flow of bile is unequaled among the common herbs. It raises the secretion of bile by over 50%. It is used specifically to promote the health of the liver and related organs and glands. Research indicates that it aids recovery from many kinds of liver disease, including hepatitis, liver congestion, gallstones, and liver insufficiency.

Artichoke

Another classic bitter herb, artichoke protects the liver against toxins and infections. Artichoke also lowers blood cholesterol, blood sugar, and has been shown to stimulate the regeneration of liver cells. The active ingredient in artichoke is cynarin which is found in highest concentrations in the leaves. Like silymarin, cynara extract has demonstrated significant liver protecting and regenerating effects. It also possesses a choleretic (bile stimulating) effect. This is a very important property: if the bile is not being transported adequately to the gallbladder, the liver is at increased risk of damage. Choleretics are very useful in the treatment of hepatitis and other liver diseases via this "decongesting" effect.

Artichoke has shown significant protective effects against toxicity. Investigations are still being conducted on artichoke's beneficial pharmacological effects on liver and gallbladder functions—the most recently documented in 2002—which noted that the leaf extract actually reversed membrane damage done by harmful chemicals in liver cells and, in doing so, enhanced bile production.
